I am proud to serve as a patron of the Klima-Utopien creative competition because I believe stories can help us imagine the future we still have the power to create. Climate change is not a fate we must passively accept; it is an unfolding crisis that demands imagination, solidarity, and determined action.
In my own work, I try to write utopian science fiction that remains grounded in real science, politics and economics, showing that a better world is difficult, but possible. This competition invites writers and artists to look beyond catastrophe and picture communities, technologies, and ways of living that make a livable future believable.
We need what I call an “angry optimism”: clear-eyed about the dangers, yet unwilling to surrender hope. I look forward to the visions that participants will bring to this vital conversation.
